THE CHURCH HOUSE
This 3 bay Quaker Style house and tiny 2 bay cottage sit next to the First Congregational Church of Nantucket. The home was built in 2003 and was designed to respect its place in one of the nations oldest surviving Quaker neighborhoods. The challenge and success of the project was in its capacity to construct a very large program of rooms and functions into a relatively small-scaled set of structures.
It was also important to create outside living spaces, lush gardens, and to protect the 50-year old shade trees, only inches away from the new cottage. The site layout faces primarily towards the church, while maintaining garden and harbor views. The built-ins throughout the house maximize the use of space making the house appear bigger than it really is. Quaker paneling and traditional detailing are used in reverence to its location.
